La Purisima Concepcion de Nuestra Señora de Caborca

Nuestra Senora de la Purisima Concepcion de Caborca was also founded by Father Eusebio Kino, a year after Bac in 1693. Caborca’s history is one marred by violence from the beginning. The original church was built in 1694 by Fr. Xavier Saeta who was martyred and the church burned 6 months later. It was repaired by 1700, yet in 1730 another priest, Fr Tomas Tello was murdered and the structure found itself in ruins again. A third church was destroyed in the Pima Rebellion of 1751. By the time the Jesuits were expelled in 1767 Caborca had become a cabecera, or head church and had a visita in Pitiquito. (Eckhart, 1967)

The current Church was begun in 1803, by Franciscans from Queretaro, shortly after Bac was completed and sits about 1 km east of the original site. That Church, most of which stands today, was dedicated on May 8th, 1809.
